Makeup Tips For Beginners

There are many people that struggle with makeup and I was one of these people growing up and wanted to share some tricks and tips on makeup for those that are new to makeup. beginners

1: How To Prep The Skin

It is very important to prep your skin before applying any makeup this will help your makeup last and look amazing.

The most important step is to apply your make-up on a fresh clean skin.

  • Cleans the skin: Use a cleanser to remove any dirt or old makeup that is on the skin. Applying makeup on the dirty skin will not only make your makeup look ugly but it will have effects on your skin.
  • Use toner: It is important to use a toner to remove any dirt that may not be out with the cleanser and will leave the skin smooth.
  • Moisturise: Make sure to apply moisturiser to your skin before applying makeup. Not only it will make your makeup application on better it will make a barrier between the skin and the makeup.
  • Primer: Applying primer is an optional step, however, I definitely will recommend to do so. The primer will help your foundation to last longer, apply better and depending on what one you get it will help different parts of your skin.

2: Choose the right shade of foundation

I cannot stress enough how hard it was for me to choose a foundation that was my shade as a teenager as I didn't know my skin's undertone or what I had to choose. There are different techniques you can do to find the perfect shade for yourself.

  • If you are going to be choosing the shade yourself at a drugstore it might be hard however, you can pick three shades that you think is close to your skin tone and try the shades out on your jawline, this is the best place to try the shades as it is important to match your foundation to your neck.

3: Choosing the right coverage of foundation

There are different foundations with different coverage options. It is important for you to first know what coverage you want for your skin concerns.

  • If you have acne or blemishes you would like to cover up you can go for a full coverage foundation and apply it as a thin layer not to look cakey.
  • If you have few blemishes here and there but the rest of your skin is pretty good I recommend going with light/medium foundations. This foundation will give you less coverage than the full coverage however, you can build the coverage on the areas needed and it will help your makeup to look more natural.
  • If you have a good skin that doesn't really have any blemishes or any concerns I recommend you go with a light foundation or even tinted moisturisers. These will help even out your skin tone and wouldn't cover many concerns.
4: Applying foundation

There are different tools that can be used to apply foundation and each tool will give different effects.

  • Fingertips are one of the easiest way and cheapest way of applying your foundations. The heat of your foundation will help blend your foundation easy, however, I from my experience I never liked to use my finger as it is a very easy way of spreading bacteria and it is very messy.

  • Sponges are definitely my favourite there are different sponges in the market I love using the beauty blenders they are more on the pricey side, if you are looking for a cheaper option I can say go have a look at the real technique sponges I haven't yet tried them, however, I heard really good things about them. Sponges will help give full or even light/medium coverage, they blend your foundation into your skin very quickly and make your foundation look more natural.

  • There are also different foundation brushes on the market which each gives different coverage and different tools I will be mentioning two for now. Flat foundation brush, this is the most common brush that is used it gives a full coverage but it does take longer to apply the foundation as it is small and can leave your foundation looking streaky. The second one will be the flat top kabuki brushes these buff and blend the foundation perfectly most of them also give a full coverage look but making it look more natural by buffing in the products.

5: Concealer

There are two different reasons you may wish to use concealer and one is for under eyes and the other to be used on imperfections.

  • For under eyes the best option will be something that will moisturise the under the eye and not look dry. To cancel out any dark circles you pay wish to use pink/salmon tones but it is an optional step. Concealers with highlighters are my favourite or you can use a concealer that is 1/2 shades lighter than your skin tone to brighten up the under eye area.
  • For blemishes and imperfections, it is good to use a concealer that is matte and full coverage, this concealer should also match your foundation shade and not be lighter like the under eye concealer as you do not want to draw more attention to the blemish you want to hide it.

6: How to make your foundation and concealer last all day

This was an option that I never skip even when I was a teenager as I have an oily skin but there was a mistake that I have done.

  • So, it is important to use a setting powder to set your foundations these can be done with different kind of powders but as a beginner I recommend to get a transparent powder and lightly apply to your face this was a mistake I've done and apply too much don't there is no need and it will make your foundation look heavy.
  • Setting sprays are also really good to use as well to set your makeup but I recommend to use powder first as that is a better way in my opinion.
